The Laundry Dilemma: Once a Week vs. Once a Day

Laundry used to be a major stressor for me. As a single mum, the mountain of chores seemed to grow faster than I could climb it, and the piles of clothes felt like they had a life of their own. Determined to turn things around, I set out to make laundry less of a juggling act and more of a breeze.

After testing various strategies, I turned laundry from chaos into a manageable task. These tips make it much less stressful and might help you decide: Should you do laundry weekly or live with "almost done"?

Once a Week Laundry Routine

Pros:

  • Efficient Time Use: Knock out a week’s worth of laundry in one epic, marathon session. Bonus points if you find socks from 2018!

  • Energy & Resource Savings: Fewer loads mean you're not only saving the planet, but also feeling smug about it while avoiding a second mortgage on your utility bill.

  • Clear Schedule: You’ve got one laundry day, and it’s circled in red. The rest of the week? You’re free from laundry’s clingy grip (until that day comes… and comes hard).

Cons:

  • Overwhelming: It's like climbing Laundry Everest. Halfway through, you might wonder if the mountain of clothes is secretly multiplying when you turn your back.

  • Risk of Backlog: Miss a laundry day? You’re entering dangerous territory. Suddenly, one week becomes two, and you’ll need a shovel (and possibly a hazmat suit) to get through the backlog.

Once a Day Laundry Routine

Pros:

  • Consistent Maintenance: Doing a little bit each day means you’ll never face Mount Laundry—just Laundry Hill, which sounds much less intimidating. Plus, clothes won’t have time to form alliances in the hamper.

  • Faster Turnaround: Toss in a load, and voilà! Fresh clothes without needing to dedicate an entire day to the laundry gods. No more hunting for that one shirt under a sea of mismatched socks.

  • Flexibility: Need to fit laundry around your life? No problem! You can throw in a load between meetings, meals, or midlife crises. It's the workout plan you didn’t ask for but got anyway.

Cons:

  • Time-Consuming: Sure, it’s just a small load each day. But by the end of the week, you’ll wonder if laundry has become your part-time job—without benefits.

  • Increased Energy Use: The frequent buzzing of the washing machine may become the soundtrack of your life, and yes, the electricity bill will start acting like it’s on a daily spin cycle too.

Efficient Laundry Tips for a Slick System

Now that we’ve compared the weekly versus daily approach, let’s look into some tips to create a laundry system that’ll transform the chaos into a smooth operation for your busy home!

1. Invest in Time-Saving Laundry Gadgets

Time-saving laundry gadgets can transform your routine. Think large drum washing machines (I love my Haier), garment steamers, laundry folders, or electric drying racks to make life easier. My favourites? A handy folding and a heated clothes rack—perfect for delicates and skipping the ironing! Yup, less ironing and a bit of heat into your room too🔥

As for tumble dryers, my 9-year-old Bosch still works like a dream with its auto programs and self-cleaning feature. It’s even plumbed into the drain, so no emptying needed! While my model's discontinued, there are similar Bosch dryers available.

For an extra boost, toss in some natural dryer balls—they speed up drying and reduce creases. Win-win!

These eco-friendly, reusable balls reduce creases, shorten drying time, and help cut down on energy use—good for your clothes and the planet.

2. Implement Laundry Hacks for Families

Get everyone involved in the laundry routine! Give each family member their own mesh laundry bag for socks and underwear—just toss the whole bag from washer to dryer. No more hunting for lost socks! Use smaller mesh bags for separating lights from darks, and colour-catcher sheets to prevent any mishaps. For each family member, tie a different colour ribbon into the zip 🌈

Great for reducing decision fatigue and keeping things tidy.

For added convenience, wardrobe wash baskets on wheels can slide into tight spaces and make moving laundry a breeze.

3. Organise Your Laundry Space

Create a functional, organised laundry space by installing shelves or bins for detergents and labelling baskets for easy sorting. Good lighting and ventilation are key! One of my favourite finds is a wheeled laundry basket with a double compartment and a shelf, perfect for houseplants and stacking when the laundry's done.

  • Mesh baskets

Great for extra storage and identifying items.

4. Set Up a Routine That Works for You

So, when all things are considered, whether you tackle it all in one day or daily, consistency is crucial, and finding ways to make it easier is essential. For extra motivation, try adding timers to your devices. The Echo Show is great for audio and visual reminders—tell the kids, "Go as quick as you can until the three songs are done!"

In Conclusion

As we battle the daily demands of life (and the occasional rogue sock), simplifying tasks like laundry can work wonders for household sanity. Whether you’re a “once-a-week warrior” or part of the “daily laundry grind,” the key is to make your routine work for your family’s chaos... I mean, lifestyle. With time-saving gadgets, clever hacks, and a bit of organization, you can turn laundry from a dreaded chore into a well-oiled, sock-sorting machine.

So, gather your detergent, harness your inner laundry master, and go forth to conquer the laundry chaos with confidence—one load at a time!
